A scrap processing company’s scrap shear was experiencing much downtime and components were continually failing. The shear manufacturer was no longer in business and no prints were available.
IRG observed the equipment in operation and production and maintenance personnel were consulted as correct operation sequence functions were determined.
A course of action was determined which included:
Maintenance and production personnel were trained in the function, proper maintenance and troubleshooting procedures of all components.
Results:
After the retrofit, the scrap processing operation produced more in one shift than it had been in two shifts. Because of this, a second operating shift was eliminated (2 people). After two years the shear had yet to have one hydraulic component failure.
